The weight of hunger in her belly is heavy.

But her husband hums. Picks meat from bones, licks his thumb.

He jabs the space between plate and glass.

She admits, “I didn’t find it.”

“Did my wife clean my house?” he asks.

She nods.

“Then maybe I didn’t hide a penny today!” he laughs.

She suppresses a flinch as he points to the empty plate.

“Make that again tomorrow”, he says.

He leaves and she is able to breathe.

She clears.

She scrubs.

She wipes until everything is in place.

And whispers confession as she sets the rat traps again.
