Night meeting

The clock chimed twelve.

I woke with fright.

As my eyes focused I recognised Michael’s face, inches from mine.

“What are you doing in my room?”

“Shhh.” As he gently touched my cheek my fear evaporated, but his hand was icy cold. “Can I have a cuddle?”

“O.K. but if Mum and Dad wake up…”

He slid beside me. His soothing voice made me sleepy. “I’ve come to say goodbye….”.

Mum shook me awake. Daylight. I was alone- Michael must have already slipped away. But something wasn’t right.

“Darling, I’m so sorry. Michael passed away last night, just before midnight.
