‘Mum, I found a spider!’ His excited voice drifts across the garden.
Her face crinkles with concern as she darts across the small yard, calling out desperately, ‘Where is it? Don’t touch it!’
Red back? White Tail? Funnel Web? The rhythmic names drum out the patter of her feet as she scurries over to him. She’s no fool – a spider bite could cause illness, or, for a child so small, even death.
‘It’s okay, mum. It’s just having a rest.’ He points innocently at the crumpled black form.
‘It’s a bit broken, but the ants are putting it back together.’
