Werewolf
New Blood

Werewolves are hiding in the city.

People are dying, and the Auditors are hunting the infected.

James has been bitten. Now he has to disappear before they find him.

Chapter One: James

I eased John back against the wall, blood running from beneath his torn armour as he grasped my hand and asked, “D-did we kill them?”

His cheek had been slashed to pieces. He looked at me through swollen purple lumps.

The fight raged on behind us. I tightened my grip around his hand.

“Yeah. They’re finishing them off now.”

John stared at me for a moment. His breathing was slow and raspy. Then he gave me a knowing nod.

“That’s good to hear.”

A howl rose behind me, filling the alleyways. A shiver ran down my spine.

“I-I have to go.”

John pulled me back.

“Yeah. Run. Hide. Don’t let the auditors get you. They’ll remove you.”

The guards were finishing off the werewolves, but the auditors were doing most of the work.

Why am I more scared of the auditors than the werewolves?

John struggled to speak.

“James, I’m scared.”

I squeezed his hand tighter.

Another howl ended somewhere behind me.

Then another.

One by one, the werewolves’ cries fell silent.

I looked back toward the fighting. The auditors were getting closer.

“I can’t stay.”

John gently let go of my hand.

“I know.”

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I’m so fucking sorry.”

“James... you were always a part of this family.”

My throat closed. Tears blurred my vision.

“Please forgive me.”

John pushed me away.

“Run.”

I got to my feet and took one last look at him.

Then I ran.

I sprinted down the alley and away from the battle, one hand clamped around my bleeding arm.

I was infected with the beast’s curse.

But I wasn’t handing myself over for extermination.

No.

I was going to run.

Hide.

Find a cure.

I wanted to live.
